For sale is a very RARE Violoncello Piccolo from the Paris School , c. 1785.
PROVENANCE
The cello piccolo used to belong to Fortunato Arico, the outstanding modern and baroque cellist who was central in establishing professional baroque performance in the United States. It was he, together with the likes of Jaap Schroetter and Stanley Ritchie who established the Aston Magna Festival and Foundation in the 1970s. The instrument was widely studied and always regarded as of an unknown maker of the Paris School, circa 1785. The pegbox is of a later hand.
This rare cello piccolo can be converted to a baroque instrument.
VALUE
The violoncello piccolo has a description from the famed William Monical of New York, dated 2006. At this time, Mr. Monical suggested a fair replacement value of $20,000. In 2017, Michael Becker Fine Violins produced an insurance letter citing an evaluation of $30,000.
Presently, the violoncello piccolo is for sale for $30,000.
DESCRIPTION
The two-piece back is made from quarter-cut maple with a curl of medium width and intensity almost horizontal in direction. The ribs are made from Wood similar to the back, The scroll is made from plain maple and is not original to the instrument. The two-piece top is made from quarter-cut spruce with a medium grain. The orange brown varnish is on a golden ground. The instrument comes with an illegible handwritten label of an unknown maker.
