STRING ORCHESTRA Summer Camp

GOALS
To introduce, refine, and reinforce the understanding and effective application of the physical, mental and musical skills necessary for successful practice and performance. To expand knowledge of music theory, history and style, applied toward the superior technical and musical command of the instrument, in a supporting yet challenging atmosphere.

There is NO CAMP during Summer 2014 - we will resume in 2015!
M-F, 9 am-12 pm

CAMP CURRICULUM    
  • BODY BALANCE: Warm-ups, Stretches and Cool-downs; Eurhythmics, Coordination, Independence of limbs and fingers
  • MUSICIANSHIP: Aural training, Call and response, Rhythmic and Melodic dictation, Sight-reading, Stage presentation and Audition preparation
  • RIGHT HAND TECHNIQUES: Open strings, Bow distribution, Bowing patterns, Tone development, Dynamics, Articulations
  • MUSIC THEORY: Musical elements and symbols, Note reading (4 clefs), Scales and Keys, Intervals, Chords, Dynamics, Tempos, various music markings (worksheets, games) 
  • MUSIC HISTORY: Basic music appreciation: a survey of musical periods, main composers, and musical forms (recordings, handouts). Evolution of string instruments and performance
  • LEFT HAND TECHNIQUES: Finger patterns, Positions, Dexterity, Scales, Shifts, Harmonics, Vibrato, Double stops, Chords
  • NON-CLASSICAL STYLES: Elements of jazz, rock, and fiddling
  • SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE TECHNIQUES
  • PERFORMANCE PREPARATION
  • SIGHT-READING

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY LEVELS
  • VIOLIN and VIOLA: Proficiency in 1st position and basic knowledge of 3rd position
  • CELLO: Proficiency in 1st and 4th positions, and basic knowledge of 2nd and 3rd positions
  • ALL STRINGS: basic 2-octave scales (C, G, D, A). Minimum 1 year of playing experience (equivalent to completed Essential Elements book 1, Suzuki book 1)

VARIA
  • All camp materials are provided (sheet music, worksheets, etc.).
  • Students must have rosin and spare strings.
  • Parents are responsible for mid-session snacks and student transportation, including timely pick-up at the end of each camp session.
  • Faculty must be informed of any medical conditions affecting students. 
  • The faculty reserves the right to deny or terminate enrollment of any participant exhibiting profound behavioral incompatibility with others or the stated scope, goals, and instruction methods used.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
While we attempt to enhance every student’s life experience through music making, we are not trained, certified or licensed in special education or music therapy, therefore teaching students with special needs (developmental, cognitive, motor, behavioral, or emotional) is outside of the scope of our programs.
